The Process Behind CEREC Same-Day Crowns

Needing a dental crown usually meant several trips to the dentist and waiting weeks for your restoration. But thanks to modern CEREC technology, we can often create and fit your high-quality ceramic crown in just one visit! Let me walk you through how this same-day crown process works.

First, we’ll make sure a crown is the best option for you.

We’ll have a chat about your situation and then prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping it slightly. This part is done very comfortably, usually with just local anaesthetic.

Next, instead of those traditional, often messy impression moulds, we use our digital scanner.

This small camera takes very accurate 3D pictures of your tooth right here in the chair. It’s much more comfortable than old-style impressions, and you can watch the process on our screen if you’d like.

Then comes the exciting part, which is designing your custom crown.

These 3D scans appear instantly on our computer, and using specialised design software, we create your custom crown right then and there. We make sure it’ll fit perfectly with your bite and look completely natural next to your other teeth.

Once we’re happy with the design, we send the details to our in-practice milling unit.

This clever machine precisely carves your new crown from a small block of high-quality, tooth-coloured ceramic. It usually takes only about 10 to 20 minutes to create your crown whilst you wait. You can even watch it being made if you’re interested!

Finally, we fit your brand new crown.

As soon as your crown is ready, we’ll check the fit and colour, give it a final polish, and then securely bond it onto your prepared tooth. And just like that, your permanent, custom-made ceramic crown is fitted, all done in a single appointment.
