Dental Bridge

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that is used to replace one or more missing teeth which are either removed due to decay or fracture.

It is a dental appliance that is cemented to the adjacent teeth on either side of the gap.

The teeth on either side of the gap are called abutments. The artificial teeth that are placed on the gap itself are called pontics.

A tooth bridge is a reliable treatment solution for edentulism. It is very durable, long-lasting, and can vastly improve the appearance of one’s smile.

Dental bridges have several types: Traditional bridges, Cantilever bridges, Maryland bridges, and Implant-supported bridges.

We would love to be a part of this collaborative process with you and design the smile you have always envisioned.

  • Traditional Bridges

They are the most common type of bridges. These are made of dental crowns that are bonded on the abutment teeth, with an artificial tooth in between them. The artificial tooth in between them is the crown that replaces the missing tooth.

This bridge is very durable, however, requires modification of the two adjacent teeth.

  • Maryland Bridges

These bridges are typically made of porcelain or metal framework that are cemented at the back of abutment teeth. In between these frameworks is the artificial tooth that will replace the missing tooth.

They are alike with traditional bridges; however, they use metal or porcelain framework for anchorage instead of crowns. They are more conservative, and more affordable than traditional bridges.

  • Implant- supported Bridges

These teeth bridges are anchored into dental implants that are surgically placed in your jawbone. Instead of crowns that are cemented on the abutment teeth, they are placed over the dental implants.

  • Cantilever Bridges

This type of bridge is like a traditional bridge except that it only uses a single abutment tooth. They are not used as often but can be utilised if the missing tooth is in the front.

There are several advantages of teeth bridge. One is improvement in the appearance of a smile because it replaces missing teeth.

Crown and bridge also help prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of place, which might cause problems with your bite and jaw joints.

The main function of dental bridges is to restore the patient’s chewing and biting function, which are difficult when one has missing teeth.

A tooth bridge can also restore your proper phonetics and speaking, which are altered when some teeth are missing.

After getting a dental bridge in Sydney, it is important to practice good oral hygiene to prevent decay and gum diseases from developing on the abutment teeth.

When one has poor brushing technique and habits, gum disease may happen which can lead to root resorption.

This scenario might expose the roots of the abutment teeth which may then cause leakage around the crowns.

The lifespan of a dental bridge is quite long, especially if one knows how to take care of it. Routine dental checkups and cleaning are also recommended for follow-up instructions for those with dental bridges.
