Case Note: Can Composite Veneers Even Out Uneven Teeth and Gaps in Sydney CBD?

Case Note ID: 06-2025-CVS

Location: Sydney CBD

Primary Treatments: Composite Veneers (Direct Bonding)

Treating Dentist: Dr Mark Nieh

Presenting Clinical Problem

A patient in her 30s attended our Sydney CBD practice with concerns about uneven upper front teeth, gaps between them, and two retained baby (primary) canines that looked different from the teeth around them. Many people ask whether composite veneers can improve this kind of unevenness without removing natural tooth structure.

During the assessment, the following concerns were noted:

  • Uneven Tooth Proportions: The upper incisors (teeth 12, 11, 21 and 22) varied in size and shape, giving the smile an uneven appearance.
  • Spacing: Visible gaps between the upper front teeth.
  • Retained Primary Canines: The two upper baby canines (teeth 53 and 63) were still present and differed in size, shape and shade from the adjacent adult teeth.

The aim was to create more even proportions and reduce the visible gaps using an additive, direct approach.

Treatment Plan & Clinical Process

Treatment was completed in a single visit.

Step 1: Assessment & Shade Selection

The dentist assessed the teeth, gums and bite and discussed the patient’s goals. A tooth-coloured composite resin (Beautifil, shade BW) was selected to suit the desired result.

Step 2: Direct Composite Veneers

Direct composite veneers were placed on six teeth – the four upper incisors (12, 11, 21, 22) and the two retained baby canines (53, 63). The resin was applied and shaped by hand directly on the teeth to adjust their size and shape and reduce the gaps. The procedure was carried out without local anaesthetic.

Step 3: Finishing

The veneers were shaped and polished, and the appearance was reviewed with the patient.

Clinical Outcome

Six direct composite veneers were completed in one visit, and the patient was happy with the aesthetic result.

Composite veneers are not permanent. They can stain, chip or wear over time and may need polishing, repair or replacement. Retained baby teeth also need ongoing monitoring, as their long-term outlook can differ from that of adult teeth. Results vary from person to person, and your dentist will discuss the risks, limitations and alternatives that apply to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical cost of composite veneers in Sydney CBD?

Composite veneers start from $700 per tooth (estimate only). The total depends on the number of teeth and the complexity of the case. Your fee is confirmed in a written quote after your consultation.

Composite veneers generally last for a number of years with good care, but they are not permanent. They can stain, chip or wear and may need polishing, repair or replacement over time. Longevity depends on your bite, habits and oral hygiene.

Sometimes. Whether a retained baby tooth is suitable depends on its root, stability and the health of the surrounding teeth and gums. Your dentist will assess this and explain the options, including how the tooth may need to be monitored in future.

Brush and clean between your teeth daily, attend regular check-ups and professional cleans, and limit staining foods and drinks. Avoid biting hard objects, and ask your dentist about a night guard if you grind or clench your teeth.
