How Dental Implants Actually Work
An implant is essentially an artificial tooth root. We place a small titanium post into your jaw bone, where it gradually fuses with the surrounding bone tissue over 3-6 months – a process called osseointegration.
After integration, an abutment and restoration may be fitted. Appearance, function and comfort vary between individuals, and adjustment or further treatment may be needed.
Alternatives may include a denture, tooth-supported bridge or no replacement, depending on the case. Each option has benefits, risks and limitations to discuss with your dentist.
Are You a Good Candidate for Implants?
Suitability depends on an assessment of oral and general health, bone, gums, medicines and other risk factors. Bone grafting or sinus procedures may be needed in some cases.
Certain medical conditions and medications may affect healing. Heavy smokers face higher complication rates, though we don’t automatically exclude smokers from treatment. We’ll assess your specific situation during consultation and give you an honest appraisal.
Age is one part of an individual assessment. Overall health, medicines and the ability to maintain and review the implant also need consideration.
Understanding the Investment
Implants require a larger upfront investment than alternatives like bridges or dentures. Implants and their restorations need ongoing maintenance and are not lifetime guarantees. Repair or replacement may be needed.
We offer flexible payment options: single or multiple implants from $86 per week, full arch (All-Teeth-On-Implants) solutions from $135 per week (subject to approval). It’s worth noting that implants aren’t covered by Medicare, though some private health funds provide partial coverage. We’ll help you understand what rebates may apply to your situation.
What the Process Looks Like
Implant treatment involves surgery and may need several stages. Risks and recovery should be discussed before treatment, rather than judged by comparison with someone else’s experience.
After placement, there may be a healing period of 3-6 months while the implant integrates with the jaw bone. Timing and any temporary restoration depend on the individual treatment plan.
