Root Canal Pain

Root Canal Pain

Toothache may be excruciating and intolerable for a lot of people.

Especially when food lodges inside a cavitated tooth, or when hot and cold temperatures meet an exposed pulp, the pain becomes unbearable.

In these instances, patients resort to pain relievers in the hopes of easing out the dental pain.

However, pain relief is temporary only and does not resolve the real issue that causes root canal pain.

What are the root canal symptoms that may require immediate treatment?

root canal pain
    • Pain when chewing or biting food
    • Swelling and tenderness on the gums near the affected tooth
    • Tooth discolouration (tooth becomes grayish or black in colour)
    • Persistent and severe pain that does not go away with pain reliever
    • Pus or fistula drainage on the gum area near the affected tooth
    • Slight or extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures

The affected tooth will be treated by a root canal dentist. This procedure may last longer than other dental treatments. This is done by an endodontist, a dentist who specialises in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the injuries of pulp tissue.

The first procedure done for tooth root canal procedure is taking radiographs. Through this radiograph, the Sydney dentist can assess the number of canals, the shape of canals, and the condition of the surrounding tooth tissues.

The dentist may use local anaesthesia prior to canal opening so that you may feel comfortable during the whole procedure. After this, root canal therapy will commence with access preparation, canal debridement and shaping, and sealing of the root canal.

After the root canal treatment, it is normal to feel slight pain or sensitivity since the surrounding tissues are still sore or inflamed from the treatment.

The dentist Sydney may prescribe over-the-counter pain relievers alongside antibiotics if there’s an active infection or a possibility of infection. Antibiotics will help kill the bacteria and prevent the spread of bacteria.
