Root Canal Treatment Guide

Root Canal Treatment Guide

A root canal treatment, or endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure that rescues severely damaged or infected teeth. It involves the removal of the tooth’s inner pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels.

By cleansing, disinfecting, and sealing the tooth, we can alleviate discomfort and avoid the necessity of tooth extraction.

Root canal therapy becomes necessary when the inner pulp of a tooth becomes infected due to factors like deep decay, cracks, fractures, or trauma.

Signs of pulp infection include severe toothache, sensitivity to temperature changes, swelling, and potential abscess formation.

Swift treatment is imperative to halt the spread of infection.

Root Canal Treatment Guide

  • Diagnosis and Assessment

Our experienced dentists in Sydney begin by conducting a comprehensive examination, often with X-rays, to evaluate the extent of damage and determine the need for a root canal.

  • Local Anaesthesia

A local anaesthetic solution is administered before the procedure to ensure no pain and discomfort is felt throughout the process.

  • Access Opening

A small opening is created on the tooth’s surface, providing access to the pulp chamber.

  • Cleaning and Shaping

Using specialised tools, the infected pulp is gently removed, and the inner chamber is thoroughly cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate any remaining bacteria.

  • Filling and Sealing

Once the root canal is clean and dry, it is filled with biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The access opening is then sealed to prevent further contamination.

  • Post-Procedure Restoration

Depending on the damage, a crown or filling may be applied to restore the tooth’s strength and appearance.

Root canal treatment offers multiple benefits, including pain relief, preservation of the natural tooth, enhanced oral health, and improved bite comfort. It also eliminates the need for extraction and subsequent tooth replacement.

After the procedure, mild discomfort or sensitivity may occur, manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending follow-up appointments are vital for a successful recovery.
