What is a Tooth Crown?

A dental crown is a cap or covering that is placed over a decayed or damaged tooth to restore its original size, shape, strength, and appearance.

They are cemented onto the tooth and fully cover the visible portion of a tooth that lies above the gum line.

It can be made from a variety of materials: resin, porcelain, metal, or zirconia.

Tooth crown is also used in implant cases to replace a tooth which has been removed either due to decay, accident, or disease.

Crown for teeth is usually indicated due to following reasons:

  • For tooth protection

Teeth that have been damaged and weakened by decay are prone to fracture without dental crowns.

  • Restoration of a tooth that has been fractured or cracked.
  • For tooth support

Root-canal treated teeth become weak due to canal access and preparation. A  crown tooth is needed to support biting forces after this procedure.

  • For dental implant

for dental implant covering and anchorage of a dental bridge.

  • For improved appearance of discoloured or malposed teeth.

Dental crown requires reduction of a tooth to fit the crown itself. There will be a need for several visits, especially if the material of choice needs to be fabricated by the laboratory.

This will include initial consultation and explanation, trimming down your teeth, trial fitting, and final placement of the tooth crown. During the time that your crown tooth is being processed, a temporary crown will be placed on your tooth for the time being.

However, teeth crown may cause sensitivity to hot or cold liquids after the procedure. There may also be pain or sensitivity when biting down since patients are not used to having crowns in the first place.

Dentist crown may also become chipped, especially if it is made with resin or porcelain. Care should be taken when biting down with dental crowns to avoid breakage after its placement.

A crown tooth in Sydney is a very effective dental treatment for a weakened or missing tooth. Its strength is far more reliable than removable dentures, and is much more sturdy during biting and natural occlusion.
